QI audience pleasures 2

The Extract i watched was the extract "This could not possibly end in tears" In the extract, Stephen Fry (the presenter) is showing to the panelists the physics of pouring water into a glass, placing card on top of the glass, flipping it upside down and the card still sticking to the glass. The extract is intended for mass audiences as it is able to entertain people with Stephen Fry's humourous preparation of the experiment (he exclaims: Oh god i hope this will work, which makes the audience feel like they are one with Stephen Fry, as for once, they are on the same level of intelligence) and also to educate people by teaching them something that they likely did not know prior to watching the episode. The fact that Stephen Fry appears alongside comedians such as Alan Davies and Jimmy Carr is an example of audience recognition as they feel familiar and often more comfortable with the actors/comedians.

The audience in the episode (and in the television show in general) are positioned as an active audience as they often engage with the seemingly simple questions positioned by Stephen Fry and try to answer them while they are watching the TV (but they will likely always be wrong, as it is important to keep a television show with twists and turns that are unexpected by the audience to keep the show interesting.

After Stephen Fry demonstrates the ability of 'sticking' the water to the card, he further manages to impress the audience (who can be viewed as an omnipresent audience due to the show being filmed live and watched by over hundreds of thousnds of people) by removing the card from the glass, and the water seemingly defies gravity by not falling to the floor, which then restores the audience as never really knowing what could happen
